Grants for combat Citrus Tristeza Virus

Great satisfaction with the outcome in favor of Sicilian agriculture
News on Citrus Tristeza Virus: agreement to found a special program for the regions of Southern Italy.


In the presence of the Director General of DG SANCO, DG AGRI, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, the Hon Giuseppe Castiglione, the Councillor for Agriculture and Food Resources of the Region of Sicily, Dario Cartabellotta, and Hon. the Giovanni La Via, representative of the European Parliament and initiative, has reached an agreement on how to tackle the citrus Tristeza Virus (CTV) in Italy, using the tools of Rural Development, regarding the planting of new citrus fruit, addition to those of the SANCO for plant emergence.

The Citrus Tristeza Virus causes a disease that occurs mainly in plants of orange and which resulted in a drastic infection on citrus plants, spread on a large scale, with the progressive involvement of the whole Sicilian territory and beyond.

In the face of such serious problems Hon. The La Via, the center-right New Head of Delegation to the European Parliament and member of the Agriculture Committee, has promoted the initiative, which had already led to the conduct of an audit in the regions of Southern Italy, to assess the prevalence of the disease in the area and check the existing problems, as well as real opportunities for intervention.

"After the meeting today (April 2 , 2014, ed) we got a great result. European Commission, through DG SANCO is available to co-finance a special program aimed at eradicating and slaughtering of infected plants in order to contain the spread of the disease, in addition to providing for the introduction of a program of monitoring and surveillance intended to have precise information on the propagation of virus diseases,"said the MEP in Sicily at the end of the meeting.

"The comparison with DG Agriculture of the European Commission - adds the Way - has also allowed to identify a path to get a rise from 50% to 70% of the public contribution to the replanting of citrus, as well as a measure for the transitional the income of the citrus Tristeza forced to uproot from their own orchard."

Applauded even by the Councillor for Agriculture and Food Resources of the Region of Sicily, Dario Cartabellotta, who expressed thanks for the action being taken by the Hon. Via and the great satisfaction because "finally a serious problem of Sicilian agriculture is moving towards a solution, based on an integrated intervention able to give prompt and substantive responses to the agricultural world Sicilian."

Now the ball will go to the regions involved which must, by April 30 and through the Ministry, submit a request and a response program.

Undersecretary Giuseppe Castiglione , who will coordinate the activities of the Regions, has expressed satisfaction with the results achieved, which "represents a response to the legitimate demands of the world citrus in serious trouble and a tangible sign of the government ."
